Description

The 1981 smash hit “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)” by Daryl Hall & John Oates is one of the most celebrated tracks in pop history. Musically, it is a masterclass in new wave soul, anchored by a pioneering Roland CompuRhythm drum machine pattern, a smooth synthesizer line, and a iconic, driving bassline. Interestingly, the song’s groove was so infectious that Michael Jackson openly admitted to Daryl Hall that he lifted it to create the bassline for his legendary track “Billie Jean”. While often mistaken for a love song about setting boundaries in a relationship, the lyrics were actually written as a protest against the music industry and corporate manipulation, asserting their artistic independence.

The rendition featured on Episode 52 of Live from Daryl’s House breathes vibrant, heavy funk into the original 80s pop arrangement. Filmed at Daryl Hall’s home, this performance strips away the polished corporate 80s aesthetic in favor of a raw, spontaneous jam-session atmosphere.
